How Long Does a Re-Roof Actually Take?

“How long will it take?” is usually the second question we’re asked about a re-roof, right after price. The honest answer for most Bristol homes: less time than people fear, but with more variables than a single number suggests. Here’s a realistic picture.

Typical timelines by property

A standard two-bed Victorian terrace re-roof — strip, new felt and battens, re-tile or re-slate — typically runs 3 to 5 working days once scaffolding is up. A semi runs similar or slightly longer. Larger properties, complex rooflines with multiple valleys and dormers, or full slate jobs on steep pitches can stretch to a fortnight. When we quote, we give a day range for your actual roof, not a generic promise.

Scaffolding adds days either side

Scaffolding usually goes up a day or two before the roofing starts and comes down within a few days after completion — it’s a separate trade with its own schedule. So a “4-day re-roof” occupies your house’s exterior for more like a week and a half end to end. Plan parking and access around that.

Weather is the honest variable

A stripped roof needs dry working windows. Good roofers strip only what they can felt the same day, so your house is never left open overnight — but persistent rain still pauses work. Bristol summers give long reliable windows; deep winter jobs need more slack in the schedule. If a roofer promises a fixed finish date in January regardless of weather, that’s bravado, not planning.

What can genuinely extend the job

The main one is what’s found underneath: rotten battens or rafter ends that need replacing before anything goes back on. This is common on roofs that have leaked quietly for years, and it’s why the “what if you find something worse” conversation belongs at quote stage. Conservation-area material requirements can also add lead time — matching reclaimed slate takes longer to source than concrete tile. See our re-roofing page for what a full job involves.

Living through it

You stay in the house throughout. Expect noise from stripping and battening (the loudest days are early), some vibration, and a skip outside. A tidy crew sheets over the loft to catch dust and clears the site daily — worth asking about when comparing quotes.
