Bristol’s older streets are roofed in two main materials: natural Welsh slate, which the council’s Clifton and Hotwells appraisal notes came by boat from Welsh quarries, and red clay double-Roman tiles from Bridgwater. Get the material wrong on a repair and it shows from the street for decades.
Many Georgian and early Victorian terraces in Kingsdown, Montpelier and Clifton also hide a butterfly roof behind the front parapet. From the pavement it looks flat; in reality it drains into one central valley gutter that has to be kept clear and sound.

Clay and slate, not concrete
Bristol City Council’s character appraisals for areas from Cotham and Redland to Westbury-on-Trym and Montpelier list concrete roof coverings as harmful to the area. Matching the original slate or clay is the right repair.

Roofing in Bristol: what to know
Bristol has 33 conservation areas, and much of the inner city falls inside one. That does not usually stop a like-for-like repair, but it does mean the choice of slate or tile, the treatment of chimneys and the size of any new dormer or rooflight all matter. The council’s appraisals single out large dormers, rooflights and concrete tiles as the changes that most often harm an area’s character.
East Bristol is different again. Easton, St George and Fishponds are built largely of grey and reddish Pennant sandstone, quarried locally in the Avon and Frome valleys. Pennant was used for walls rather than roofs, so the roofs on those terraces are usually slate or clay tile, and the stone itself affects how chimney and party-wall flashings are detailed.
