Why we use EPDM over felt
Bristol’s got a lot of 1960s–1980s extensions with old felt roofs nearing the end of their life. EPDM rubber is what we fit instead, and here’s why.
30–50 year lifespan
Properly installed EPDM lasts far longer than traditional felt, which typically needs replacing every 10–15 years.
One seamless sheet
Fitted in large pieces with minimal joins — fewer joins means fewer places for a leak to start.
No flames, no torches
Fully adhered, not torched on — safer to install, especially close to timber or on smaller extensions.
Handles ponding well
Flat roofs often see some standing water after rain — EPDM tolerates this far better than ageing felt.
Low maintenance
No regular recoating needed. An occasional check for debris is normally all it takes.

£1,200–£1,650 for a full EPDM re-cover, including strip-out of the old felt.

£100–£250 for patching a torn or split section of an existing EPDM or felt roof.

Often worth adding when re-covering — ask for a combined quote if your extension feels cold or hot.

My flat roof has standing water after rain — is that normal?
A little is common and not always a problem. Persistent pooling that doesn’t drain within 48 hours is worth getting checked, especially on older felt.

Can you fit EPDM over our existing felt roof?
Sometimes, if the deck underneath is sound — but we’ll usually recommend stripping back to the deck so any hidden rot or damp gets caught early.

How long does an EPDM install take?
A typical garage or small extension roof takes 1–2 days, weather permitting.

Is EPDM noisy in the rain?
Not noticeably more than felt — any extra noise usually comes down to the insulation and deck underneath rather than the membrane itself.
